menindee lakes and more of the hill

a bad picture of yesterdays dust storm

this (believe it or not) is menindee lakes......note the size of the trees in the distance.........i was told by some locals that it had been dry for many years (only filling when heavy rains are recieved in queensland to flood the darling river) last time i was here it was full! i will have to see if i can find my photo's when i get home.

on top of the mullock heap is the broken hill tourist information and look out (broken hill version of eureka tower maybe?)

the hill's giant park bench at the lookout. the seat is chest height to give you some idea of the size

broken hill from the lookout
making tracks back tomorrow so will post a few pics of the murray on my way.

silverton and mudi mundi

mundi mundi plain in the background from mundi mundi lookout

mundi mundi plain from close up. this is what it looks like for as far as the eye can see. it is also known as 'we of the never never plain'  today was overcast with dust storms and low 20's

silverton hotel with replica mad max car out the front. this hotel stars in many commercials and movies including mad max. on average a commercial or movie is filmed in or around silverton every six weeks

around the hill

one for david..... the desert doesn't rust things. these gems were in the middle of broken hill

some old mine workings

the hill is full of grand old buldings like this and there really is a pub on every corner
one thing i want to say.........................i have crossed the nullabor plain several times, driven the birdsville track, driven vast areas of outback south australia and western australia and the 300 odd km drive from mildura to broken hill rates as the most boring uninteresting drives i have ever done
the most interesting thing was playing count the crows, thank god for ipods and cruise control

hattah lakes to wentworth

the picture above is lake hattah we used to camp here first night on trips to the outback years ago

the picture above is perry sand dunes about 4km from wentworth in NSW just across the border from mildura
i have made it to broken hill this afternoon 37c here. In the morning i am heading out to Silverton and the Mundi Mundi Plains lookout hopefully early enough to get some good lighting
all going well, i will post tomorrow with some silverton photos
bye for now

over the (broken) hill 09

the next adventure..................
on sunday i will start a journey to Broken Hill in far western New South Wales
i last visited this area in 1982 or 1983 if my memory serves me correct
this will only be a quick trip over a week as a break between jobs
